How Tupac, Too Short and E-40 inspired Oakland’s Hella Tea

Hella Tea owner talks hip-hop puns and Lipton as an escape. Article by: JESSICA YADEGARAN | Oakland native Chantrelle Edwards started Hella Tea in 2017 with $100 in her bank account and many epic hip-hop tea puns in her head. Tea Short, Steep Curry and M. Tea Hammer were born out of her love for Bay Area hip-hop culture, yes, but her connection to tea runs even deeper. Even as a child, a cup of Lipton was sometimes the only thing that helped her escape the “madness and misery,” she says, of gun violence and homelessness in East Oakland. Today,...

Rediscovering 174 years of Tea

Article by: Aurora Prehn and Mark Nesbitt From: Teajourney.pub Collection No. 73218 Fancy Tea, or Old men’s eye-brows tea, bound in silk thread from the Collection of G.C. Scorer, of the firm of Fortnum, Mason & Co. 1872. The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew houses a remarkable cache of tea leaves and tea material culture collected over the past 174 years. Feats of Clay – Creating Teaware

Yesterday I had my first private pottery lesson from the talented Marc Jeannin at Feats of Clay. Feats of Clay is the oldest pottery studio in Austin! It is a woman-owned pottery studio and gallery that’s been operating since 1976. The owner Rebeccah Polk was very friendly and paired me up with Marc Jeannin who specializes in teaware. Marc’s work is truly outstanding and his ability to guide a newbie such as myself around a pottery wheel was encouraging and fun! It’s a lot harder than it looks, and I have a new found respect for these clay artists. He...

Matcha Cookies – Brown Butter, White Chocolate, Walnuts

I made these DELICIOUS Matcha cookies following Becca’s recipe on Cooking-Therapy.com. They are Brown Butter White Chocolate Matcha cookies, and they are down right scrum-diddly-umptious! The only thing I added was chopped walnuts to the mix. These little green cookies take some patience and time, but they are well worth it! I used Jade Leaf Organic Culinary Matcha for these cookies. They were the perfect companion to my favorite cup of Ippodo Matcha – Ummon-No-Mukashi. As previously stated before, this is by far my favorite Matcha yet! It’s definitely more of a splurge at $30 for a small tin of...

Stop Asian Hate

**The featured photo is my friend So Han Fan & Owner of West China Tea in Austin, Texas.** This was yet another hate crime in America. Saying he “snapped,” “lost it” or “had a bad day” is sickening and disrespectful to the victims and their families. I could care less what kind of day he had, or whether his family was “utterly” shocked. I care about justice and ending the disgusting racist behavior aimed at Asian, African, and Indo-Americans. I was born like everyone else on this planet with zero control over the color of my skin. I also have...
